Artist
J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) pushed further toward dissolution of form than any painter of his century, using light, weather and water to break down the distinction between subject and atmosphere. He exhibited constantly from adolescence and grew wealthy, while living privately and increasingly reclusively under an assumed name. Ruskin’s Modern Painters was written largely to defend him.
