Artist
Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906) was born into Kerala aristocracy and became the first Indian painter to apply European oil technique and academic realism to Hindu mythological subjects. He later set up a lithographic press so that his images could reach ordinary households as cheap prints, which shaped how gods and epic characters have been pictured across India ever since. His work remains both hugely popular and a subject of serious debate about colonial influence on Indian art.
