Rouen Cathedral, West Facade

The cathedral front dissolves into crusted, encrusted paint the colour of stone at a particular hour, the architecture almost secondary to the light falling across it. Monet rented rooms opposite the facade and worked on more than thirty canvases of the same view simultaneously, switching between them as the light moved. The series is the clearest demonstration of his central idea that the subject is the light, not the thing.
