Artist
Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894) was independently wealthy, which meant he never had to sell a painting and could instead buy his friends’ — the Impressionist collection he bequeathed to France became the core of the Musee d’Orsay. His own work is cooler and more architectural than theirs, closer to photography in its cropping and its stillness. He was largely forgotten as a painter until the 1960s.
