Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres

Napoleon on his Imperial Throne

US$ 627.00

Napoleon sits rigidly frontal in coronation robes, holding sceptre and hand of justice, rendered in a deliberately archaic, iconic manner drawn from medieval images of God enthroned and from ancient statues of Jupiter. Ingres piles on ermine, gold embroidery and velvet with almost hallucinatory precision. Critics at the 1806 Salon found it strange and cold, and Napoleon reportedly disliked it.

Artist

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) trained under David and became the standard-bearer of French Neoclassicism against Delacroix’s Romanticism, insisting that drawing mattered more than colour. His portraits and nudes are marked by an anatomically impossible but visually compelling elongation of the body. He spent long periods in Rome and Florence and led the French Academy there.
