Artist
Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) taught anatomy through dissection and used photography as a working tool, pursuing an uncompromising realism that repeatedly put him at odds with Philadelphia society and cost him his teaching post. His portraits are often unflattering to the point of discomfort. He is now generally regarded as the most important American painter of his century.
