Artist
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) began as a porcelain painter, which left him with a lifelong preference for warmth, softness and pleasure over anything austere. He assembled this canvas over months on the terrace of the Maison Fournaise at Chatou, bringing his friends out one at a time to pose. The woman with the dog at the lower left is Aline Charigot, whom he later married.
