Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) was born in Germany, raised in Massachusetts and trained in Dusseldorf, and became the great painter of the American West. He travelled with survey expeditions and turned his sketches into enormous studio canvases that toured as paid attractions. Taste turned against him late in life and his reputation recovered only in the 1960s.
