Utagawa Hiroshige

Kanbara: Night Snow

US$ 474.00

Three figures make their way up a village street under heavy falling snow, the roofs and slopes rendered as flat grey and white shapes with almost no line at all. Hiroshige gradates the sky from dark at the top to pale at the horizon, reversing the usual convention. It is widely considered the finest print in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido series.

Artist

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced landscape prints of extraordinary atmospheric subtlety, specialising in weather and time of day — rain, snow, mist, dusk — at a point when ukiyo-e was dominated by actor and courtesan subjects. The Tokaido series made his reputation and remains the most reproduced body of work in Japanese printmaking. Van Gogh and Whistler both copied and adapted his compositions directly.
