Garden at Sainte-Adresse

Monet’s father and aunt sit in a garden above the sea while two figures lean on the railing and steamers cross the horizon, everything blazing in flat, bright, unmixed colour. Monet later called it his Chinese painting, meaning the way the three horizontal bands of terrace, sea and sky stack up like a screen instead of receding.
