Artist
Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) spent nearly his entire career in Rome, painting mythological and biblical subjects for a small circle of learned collectors rather than for churches or courts. He worked slowly and intellectually, sometimes arranging wax figures in a box to plan his compositions. French classicism claimed him as its founding master, and the Academy in Paris taught his work as doctrine for over a century.
