Winslow Homer

Breezing Up (A Fair Wind)

US$ 666.00

Three boys and a man sail a catboat on a stiff breeze, the hull heeled over and the horizon tilted with it, spray and cloud filling the upper canvas. Homer reworked the picture repeatedly, painting out a second boat to leave the sky emptier. It has been read since its exhibition in 1876 as a picture about American possibility, though Homer never said so.

Artist

Winslow Homer (1836-1910) began as a Civil War illustrator for Harper’s Weekly and taught himself to paint, eventually moving to the Maine coast where he produced the marine pictures he is best known for. He worked in both oil and watercolour with equal authority and lived increasingly alone. His late seascapes strip out human presence almost entirely.
