Gustave Courbet

A Burial at Ornans

US$ 570.00

A crowd of ordinary provincial villagers stands around an open grave on a canvas over six metres wide, a scale previously reserved for kings, saints and battles. Courbet used his actual neighbours as models and refused to organise them into any hierarchy or dramatic focus. The critical outrage it caused in 1850 was less about the subject than about giving peasants monumental treatment.

Artist

Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) led the Realist movement in France, insisting that painting should depict only what the artist could actually see and rejecting both academic idealism and Romantic fantasy. Fiercely political, he was imprisoned after the Paris Commune and fled to Switzerland, where he died. He staged his own independent exhibitions when official juries rejected him, an early precedent for the avant-garde breaking from institutions.
