Gustav Klimt

Hope II

US$ 723.00

A pregnant woman bows her head, eyes closed, in a robe of gold and coloured medallions, while three mourning faces gather at her feet and a skull rests against her belly. Klimt sets birth and death in the same ornamental field without resolving which is winning. He originally called it Vision.

Artist:

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) led the Vienna Secession and built a style out of gold leaf, mosaic pattern and frankly erotic figuration that had no real precedent. He took commissions from Vienna’s Jewish industrial families and painted their wives into icons. His late landscapes are almost abstract fields of colour.
