Frederic Edwin Church

US$ 636.00

The Ecuadorian volcano throws a plume of ash across a blood-red sunrise while a waterfall drops into shadow in the foreground. Church painted it in 1862, with the American Civil War at its worst, and the picture has been read ever since as a landscape carrying the temper of its moment. The sun is the only source of light and it is barely winning.

Artist

Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) was the leading painter of the second generation of the Hudson River School and the only pupil Thomas Cole ever took. He travelled to South America, Newfoundland and the Middle East in search of subjects, exhibiting single vast canvases as ticketed events. His house Olana above the Hudson is itself his largest work.
