Adolph Menzel

The Iron Rolling Mill

US$ 666.00

Men strain against white-hot iron in a Silesian rolling mill while others wash, eat and sleep in the corners of the same vast shed. Menzel spent months on site making studies, and the result is the first major European painting to treat heavy industry as a serious subject in its own right rather than a backdrop.

Artist:

Adolph Menzel (1815-1905) was largely self-taught and became the most celebrated painter in Imperial Germany, equally at home in Frederician history painting and in unblinking studies of modern life. He drew obsessively, filling thousands of sheets. He was short, solitary and worked from direct observation to an almost forensic degree.
