John Singer Sargent

Gassed

US$ 516.00

A line of blinded soldiers, each with a hand on the shoulder of the man ahead, is led along a duckboard walkway between the bodies of those already down. Sargent witnessed the aftermath of a mustard gas attack near Arras in 1918 and painted it at mural scale, in the same golden light he had spent a career giving to drawing rooms. A football match continues in the distance.

Artist:

John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was the outstanding portraitist of his generation on both sides of the Atlantic, born in Florence to American parents and trained in Paris. He abandoned society portraiture at the height of his fame to paint landscapes, watercolours and murals. Late in life he accepted a commission as a war artist, which produced the largest and gravest canvas of his career.
