Artist
Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691) spent his entire life in Dordrecht and never travelled to Italy, yet adopted the golden southern light of Italianate landscape painting more convincingly than most who did. He married into wealth in his forties and largely stopped painting. British collectors bought his work heavily in the eighteenth century, which is why so much of it hangs in the UK.
