Artist
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced landscape prints of extraordinary atmospheric subtlety, specialising in weather and time of day — rain, snow, mist, dusk — at a point when ukiyo-e was dominated by actor and courtesan subjects. The Tokaido series made his reputation and remains the most reproduced body of work in Japanese printmaking. Van Gogh and Whistler both copied and adapted his compositions directly.
