Pierre Puvis de Chavannes

The Poor Fisherman

US$ 639.00

A gaunt man stands motionless in a flat-bottomed boat, head bowed, while a woman gathers flowers on the bank and an infant lies in the grass, everything painted in chalky, drained colour. Puvis strips out detail, modelling and incident until only the mood remains. The picture baffled critics in 1881 and was then claimed as essential by Gauguin, Seurat, Signac and later Picasso.

Artist

Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898) worked mainly on large mural decorations for French public buildings, developing a deliberately flattened, pale and simplified manner that stood outside both academic finish and Impressionist colour. He was admired across otherwise hostile camps, and the Symbolists treated him as a figurehead. His influence on early modernism is far larger than his current public profile suggests.
