Artist
Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) led the Vienna Secession and built a manner that fused Byzantine gold ground, Japanese pattern and Symbolist eroticism into something entirely his own. He worked slowly, kept few close relationships outside his studio and family circle, and faced repeated public controversy over the sexual frankness of his work. Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka both emerged from his orbit.
