Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot

Souvenir de Mortefontaine

US$ 636.00

A woman and two children gather blossom beneath a huge feathery tree leaning over still water, the whole scene rendered in silvery greens and greys with edges deliberately softened. The title calls it a memory rather than a view, and Corot painted it in the studio from recollection rather than on the spot. It became the template for the hazy, lyrical landscapes of his late career.

Artist

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875) bridged Neoclassical landscape and Impressionism, painting sharply observed outdoor studies in Italy early on and dreamlike, atmospheric souvenirs in his later decades. He was generous with money and encouragement to younger artists, including Pissarro and Berthe Morisot. His late manner was so widely imitated and forged that authentication remains a problem.
