Pieter Bruegel the Elder

The Peasant Wedding

US$ 651.00

Guests crowd a barn as two servers carry a plank loaded with custard tarts, the bride sitting beneath a paper crown while the groom is nowhere obviously identifiable. Bruegel packs the picture with the specific business of a village feast — the bagpiper eyeing the food, the child licking a bowl in the foreground — rather than staging a ceremony. The diagonal of the table pulls the eye straight into the crush.

Artist

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c.1525-1569) painted peasant life at a scale and with an attentiveness previously reserved for religious and courtly subjects, though whether he did so with sympathy, satire, or both remains argued. He worked for sophisticated urban collectors in Antwerp and Brussels, not for the villagers he depicted. His compositions influenced Netherlandish genre painting for the next century.
