Frederic Edwin Church

Niagara

US$ 558.00

The falls fill the canvas edge to edge with no foreground bank to stand on, placing the viewer out on the water itself at the lip of the drop. Church painted it after repeated visits and dozens of studies, solving a problem earlier painters had failed at: how to convey the scale and motion of moving water. It was exhibited alone as a paid attraction and drew enormous crowds in both New York and London.

Artist

Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) was the most commercially successful American painter of the mid-nineteenth century, exhibiting single canvases as ticketed events and travelling to South America, the Arctic and the Levant in search of subjects. A student of Thomas Cole, he combined the Hudson River School’s reverence for landscape with a naturalist’s precision about geology, botany and atmosphere. His house Olana, overlooking the Hudson, is now a museum.
