William-Adolphe Bouguereau

Nymphs and Satyr

US$ 675.00

Four nymphs drag a reluctant satyr toward the water, laughing, in a woodland glade rendered with the porcelain finish and anatomical precision of the French academic tradition at full strength. Bouguereau builds the picture around the tension of the pull, every figure caught mid-motion. It hung for decades in a New York hotel bar before entering a museum collection.

Artist

William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) was among the most successful and honoured painters in France during his lifetime, producing hundreds of mythological and genre scenes with an extraordinarily polished technique. The rise of Impressionism and modernism sent his reputation into near-total collapse for most of the twentieth century. Serious reassessment of academic painting since the 1980s has brought his work back into major museum display.
