Artist
Franz Marc (1880-1916) co-founded Der Blaue Reiter with Kandinsky and built his short career almost entirely around animals, which he considered purer and more spiritually whole than human beings. He assigned emotional meanings to specific colours — blue for the masculine and spiritual, yellow for the feminine and gentle, red for matter and violence — and painted by that system. He died at Verdun at 36, just as he was being recalled from the front as a culturally significant artist.
