Jan van Eyck

The Arnolfini Portrait

US$ 582.00

A merchant and his wife stand hand in hand in a richly furnished room, a small dog at their feet, a convex mirror on the back wall reflecting the room and two additional figures standing where the viewer stands. Every object — the oranges, the single candle, the discarded clogs — has been read as symbolic, though scholars still disagree on exactly what event the picture records. The mirror’s reflection remains one of the most studied details in Western painting.

Artist

Jan van Eyck (c.1390-1441) was among the first Northern European painters to master oil painting’s capacity for minute detail and layered, jewel-like colour, working as court painter to the Duke of Burgundy. Almost nothing is known of his training, and only around twenty works are confidently attributed to him today. His technical precision set a standard that Netherlandish painting pursued for the following century.
