Frederic Edwin Church

Twilight in the Wilderness

US$ 666.00

A blazing sky of orange and crimson reflects across a still lake and a wilderness with no trace of a human figure anywhere in the frame. Painted on the eve of the Civil War, the sky’s violent colour has often been read as a premonition of the coming national crisis, though Church left no statement confirming the intent. It remains one of the most dramatic sunset paintings of the Hudson River School.

Artist

Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) was the leading figure of the second generation of the Hudson River School, expanding its scope from local American scenery to South America, the Arctic and the Middle East in search of ever more dramatic natural spectacle. A student of Thomas Cole, he combined scientific attention to atmosphere and geology with an almost theatrical sense of composition. His paintings were exhibited as single-canvas events, drawing crowds who paid admission to view them.
