A lone figure in a dark coat stands on a rocky outcrop, back turned to the viewer, gazing across a sea of drifting fog and jagged peaks. The Rückenfigur device makes the viewer stand in his place rather than opposite him — this is a picture about looking, not about the man. It became the defining image of German Romanticism’s confrontation with the sublime.

Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) turned the German landscape into a stage for solitary contemplation, painting figures who face away from us into vast, often hostile natural scenes. Trained in Copenhagen and based in Dresden for most of his career, he fell into obscurity after his death and was only rediscovered by the Symbolists decades later. His work is now read as a founding statement of Romantic painting.
