Artist
Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634) was deaf and mute from birth, known in his own time as de Stomme van Kampen, the mute of Kampen. He specialised almost entirely in winter — crowded frozen rivers painted from a high viewpoint, filled with dozens of small figures each doing something particular. He worked during the coldest decades of the Little Ice Age, when the Dutch canals froze reliably every year.
