Artist
Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) spent decades reducing painting to horizontals, verticals and three primary colours, and then, in his final years in New York, let rhythm back in. He arrived in 1940 as a refugee, fell in love with the city and with jazz, and began breaking his own black lines into pulses of colour. He died of pneumonia in 1944, with this among the last works he completed.
