Rembrandt van Rijn

The Syndics

US$ 630.00

Five sampling officials of the Amsterdam drapers’ guild look up from their ledger as though someone has just entered the room. Rembrandt sets them against a plain panelled wall in a narrow band of colour — black, white and deep red — and gives each man his own expression and weight. Widely held to be the finest group portrait ever painted.

Artist

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) painted this group portrait in his sixties, after bankruptcy, the loss of his house and collection, and the deaths of his partner and his son. It is the last great commission of his life. He gave five cloth guild officials a moment of ordinary interruption and made it monumental without a trace of flattery.
