Artist
Titian (c. 1488-1576) dominated Venetian painting for sixty years and effectively invented the modern idea of the artist as an independent figure of standing, negotiating with emperors and popes as an equal. He painted this in his thirties for the duke of Ferrara, at the height of his early brilliance with colour. Rubens and Poussin both copied it; Velazquez studied it in Madrid.
