Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

At the Moulin Rouge: The Dance

US$ 621.00

A dancer instructs a partner on the floor of the Moulin Rouge while the crowd watches from the margins, the whole scene tipped and cropped like a snapshot. Lautrec used thinned oil on cardboard so the surface stays dry and graphic rather than lush. It captures a specific Paris at a specific hour better than any photograph of it.

Artist

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) was born into an aristocratic family, broke both thighbones as a teenager and stopped growing, and made his life instead in the dance halls and brothels of Montmartre. He drew the performers there without pity and without condescension, as colleagues rather than curiosities. He died at thirty-six, having reinvented the poster as an art form along the way.
