Hans Holbein the Younger

The Ambassadors

US$ 678.00

Two young men — a French ambassador and a bishop — stand either side of a table loaded with globes, sundials, lutes and books, every object rendered exactly. Across the floor stretches a distorted grey shape that resolves into a human skull when viewed from the side. Wealth, learning and mortality in a single picture, and one of the most analysed paintings in Europe.

Artist

Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) left Basel for England, became painter to the court of Henry VIII, and produced portraits of a precision that still feels almost photographic. He painted textiles, instruments and faces with the same unblinking attention. He died in London of plague at forty-five, having created the visual record by which the Tudor court is still recognised.
