Artist
Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) painted perhaps thirty-six pictures in his life, nearly all of them quiet interiors with a woman near a window. He worked slowly, sold little, left his widow in debt, and was almost wholly forgotten for two centuries until a French critic rediscovered him in the 1860s. Only two of his surviving paintings are outdoor scenes, and this is the greater of the pair.
