Artist
John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) had just weathered the scandal of Madame X in Paris when he came to England and painted this — a deliberate turn away from society portraiture toward something quieter. He worked on it across two consecutive summers at Broadway in Worcestershire, painting only during the few minutes of dusk when the light was right, replanting the garden each year so the flowers would return on cue.
