Waterhouse painted the moment of departure rather than the death — the candles guttering, the tapestry trailing over the side, her face already elsewhere. John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) was born in Rome to two English painters and came a generation after the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He took their literary subjects and glowing colour but painted with a looser, more atmospheric hand, closer to his own century than to the fifteenth. Tennyson and Keats gave him most of his subjects, and he returned to this poem three separate times.
