Artist
Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was orphaned at two and raised by an aunt and uncle in Valencia, where the Mediterranean light that defined his painting was simply the light he grew up in. He worked outdoors at speed and at large scale, chasing effects of sun on water, wet sand and white cloth. The Spanish called him the master of light; he preferred to say he painted what he saw.
