Artist
Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) was the most radical English painter of his generation, pushing landscape toward pure light and atmosphere decades before the Impressionists. Admitted to the Royal Academy schools at fourteen, he spent a long career dissolving solid form into weather, steam and sun. He exhibited this painting at the Royal Academy in 1839, declined every offer to sell it, and left it to the nation on his death.
