Artist
Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) moved from naturalistic Dutch landscape through Cubism to the rigorous grid of black lines and primary colour that became his signature, a system he called Neo-Plasticism. He co-founded the De Stijl movement and believed that reducing painting to horizontals, verticals and primaries could express a universal order beneath appearances. He worked in Paris and London before settling in New York in 1940, where his final canvases loosened noticeably.
