Artist
Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) was a Florentine sculptor, painter and architect whose work came to define the High Renaissance. Between 1508 and 1512 he painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel for Pope Julius II — a commission he initially resisted, considering himself a sculptor before all else. The Cumaean Sibyl is one of five sibyls he set among the Old Testament prophets there, rendered as a monumental, heavily muscled figure bent over her book of prophecy.
