Ford Madox Brown

Work

A Hampstead street is dug open by navvies while every other social class in Victorian England is arranged around them — the idle rich on horseback, a beggar, orphans, and two thinkers watching from the right. Brown worked on it for thirteen years and wrote a catalogue explaining every figure. It is an entire social argument compressed into one road.

Artist

Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) trained in Belgium and Paris before settling in England, where he was closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites without ever formally joining them. He worked slowly and with fierce moral seriousness, and later designed stained glass for William Morris’s firm. His Manchester murals occupied his final decade.
