Odilon Redon

Vase of Flowers

US$ 588.00

Flowers in a plain vase against a ground of shifting, undefined colour, painted so that the blooms seem to float rather than sit. Redon was not interested in botanical accuracy; he wanted the sensation of colour arriving. Matisse admired these late flower pieces above almost anything else of their period.

Artist

Odilon Redon (1840-1916) spent the first half of his career working almost entirely in charcoal and lithography, producing dark fantastical images he called his noirs. Then, around the age of fifty, he turned to colour and never went back — pastels and oils of extraordinary luminosity, mostly flowers. He is the rare artist whose late work is far lighter than his early.
