Karl Bryullov

The Last Day of Pompeii

US$ 711.00

Citizens flee under a sky torn by volcanic lightning, statues toppling from rooftops, a mother shielding her children as ash begins to fall. Bryullov visited the excavated ruins himself and built the composition from the actual street layout and the positions in which bodies were found. It made him internationally famous and was praised by Walter Scott and Pushkin alike.

Artist

Karl Bryullov (1799-1852) was the leading Russian painter of his generation and the first to achieve genuine European celebrity, bridging Neoclassical training with Romantic drama. He spent over a decade in Italy, where he painted The Last Day of Pompeii, and returned to Russia to a hero’s reception. Ill health drove him back to Italy, where he died near Rome.
