Artist
Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) spent his career trying to rebuild painting from the ground up, treating a canvas as a constructed system of colour planes rather than a window onto a scene. The bather compositions occupied him for decades and were painted almost entirely from memory and old drawings rather than from models. Both Picasso and Matisse regarded him as the point from which modern painting begins.
