Artist:
Canaletto (real name: Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697–1768) was an Italian painter best known for his luminous, highly detailed views of Venice, making him one of the foremost vedutisti (view painters) of the 18th century. Born and trained in Venice, Canaletto initially worked alongside his father, a theatrical scene painter, which influenced his later sense of perspective and stage-like composition. He quickly became famous for his panoramic cityscapes that captured the essence of Venice with striking precision and atmosphere.
Canaletto’s work appealed especially to British collectors on the Grand Tour, leading to a strong international reputation. His paintings, often featuring the Grand Canal, Piazza San Marco, and various Venetian landmarks, combined architectural accuracy with soft skies, shimmering water, and the gentle bustle of daily life. He also spent a significant period working in England (1746–1755), where he painted London views and English country estates. Canaletto’s legacy is marked by his ability to blend technical mastery, realism, and poetic charm, securing his place as one of the greatest cityscape artists in Western art history.
