Jan Steen

The Feast of Saint Nicholas

US$ 633.00

A Dutch family celebrates Sinterklaas: a small girl clutches her doll and her bucket of presents, a boy howls because he has been given only a birch rod, and the grandmother beckons from behind a curtain. Steen fills the room with the specific chaos of a household mid-celebration. Almost every figure is reacting to somebody else rather than to the viewer.

Artist

Jan Steen (c.1626-1679) painted crowded, comic domestic scenes so consistently disorderly that a Dutch phrase for a chaotic household still bears his name. He ran a brewery and later a tavern alongside his painting career, which likely supplied both models and material. Beneath the humour his pictures are carefully constructed and often carry a moral point.
