Antoine Watteau

The Embarkation for Cythera

US$ 654.00

Couples gather on a wooded shore beside a golden barge, some rising to leave, some reluctant, cupids circling overhead. Scholars still argue whether they are departing for the island of love or leaving it behind — the picture supports either reading and settles neither. Painted with a lightness of touch that makes the whole scene feel provisional.

Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) invented a category of his own — the fete galante, elegant figures drifting through parkland in silks, somewhere between theatre and daydream. The French Academy had to create a new classification to admit him. He was tubercular and died at thirty-six, and there is a melancholy under the silk that later imitators never managed to reproduce.
