Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) led French Romantic painting against the Neoclassical establishment, favouring turbulent composition, saturated colour and literary or contemporary political subjects over ordered classical scenes. A trip to Morocco in 1832 permanently changed his palette. Baudelaire championed him in print, and the Impressionists later cited his handling of colour as a direct precedent.
